Embroidery techniques

I found this image of a cushion with paisley motifs and leaves on the Internet. I like the use of appliqué, machine stitch and small parts of embellishment. 

I would like to create a design using this mixture of fabric techniques with my own designs, mixing my use of paintings. 

I could see my motifs working well in a structure like this.
