Zebra Cushion Development ideas

This cushion is from Libertys by Kristjana Williams. The use of scale on this composition is what makes it really stand out on this digitally printed cushion on silk. The bird is the largest object because it is the main focus in the design and the detail is immaculate on silk. The use of the pale background really allows the bright colours to stand out. It is also beautifully finished with bright pink piping around which really gives it a clean look and ties it together.

This cushion is by Timerous Beasties. Although the colours are much more muted, it still has a similar composition with the bird in the centre, enlarged and a muted background. There are flashes of bright colours, keeping a warm colour palette.

This cushion is by Silken Favours and is exclusive to Liberty. This symmetrical design used small images of different birds all rotated into a symmetrical pattern. I really like the colour balance and shapes that the repeat has created. This is another layout option I can consider.

This is the first design idea I did using my painted zebras and pattern background. The gems scanned in really well and would keep the cost down of the cushion rather than sewing gems on. They also make it more practical as a cushion by being digitally printed flat. With this design there was several things that needed changing. I think after looking at these other cushion compositions I learned that by repeating my zebras it was taking the focus of the quality of the drawings. There also was not enough foliage and the zebras needed to be more central. The pattern was a painting in my sketchbook and whilst I like the use of the pattern behind the zebras, the painted quality was not neat enough to be printed. So In the design below I have recreated the pattern in Illustrator to create a sharper look and still added in the gems. I have taken the other zebras out to draw more attention to them. I have also painted more foliage to take yp half of the cushion, causing the zebras to be more central. The pink border is to indicate where piping will be.

I have taken the pattern from the zebra to create a pattern for the back of the cushion. By using a repeat pattern on the back I think it makes the cushion more unique and could cause the pricing to be more by using another pattern.
